Stressful experiences are more likely to result in trauma if the individual:
-
-Felt powerless to prevent it.
-
-Was unprepared for the stressful event(s).
-
-Experienced it unexpectedly.
-
-Experiences it repeatedly.
-
-Felt that there was intentional cruelty.
-
-Experiences the event(s) in childhood.
Trauma counseling can vary considerably from one person to another. It is important for each client to process trauma at whatever rate he or she feels appropriate. Once this has been established, some common therapeutic interventions can include:
-
-Processing traumatic event
-
-Discharging excess energy pent-up from event
-
-Learning skills to regulate the flooding of difficult emotions
-
-Rebuilding a sense of trust for situations or people
