The specific cause of panic disorder is not known, however, research suggests that a combination of biology and environment are involved, including family history, neurotransmitter abnormalities, substance abuse, and major life stressors or transitions.  Approximately 2.4 million adult United States citizens suffer from panic disorder, and the onset is typically during late adolescence and early adulthood.  Fortunately, panic disorder generally responds well to treatment.

Seattle Panic Attack Treatment

Do you sometimes become suddenly overwhelmed with strong feelings of fear and panic, and can’t figure out why?  For some, this symptom occurs with the presence of panic disorder.

Panic Disorder Treatment:

Panic disorder is a serious condition that exhibits itself in the repeated onset of panic attacks (overwhelming fear episodes) that occur often without any obvious precipitator.  This often can make the panic attack even more troubling to the individual as sufferers of panic disorder often fear embarrassment in association with their panic attacks.  Also, these individuals become so afraid of having additional panic attacks, that it can seriously affect the quality of their lives.  They will often avoid situations and locations they believe will increase the likelihood of a another attack.  In addition, sufferers of panic disorder often suffer from other serious conditions such as depression, alcoholism, or other forms of substance abuse.

Some of the physical symptoms that accompany panic attacks generally include confusion, dizziness, heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, abdominal pain, chills, hot flashes, tingling/numbness in fingers/toes, sweating, and sometimes a preoccupation with death.  These symptoms for many people occur for approximately 10-15 minutes. Because these symptoms are so frightening, often sufferers of panic disorder are first identified in the emergency room.
