Environmental factors can vary greatly, and can include traumatic or stressful situations or events.  Long-term stressors are thought to change the way the brain operates, even in the absence of the given stressor.  This may be particularly true during childhood and adolescence as the brain is forming.  This may explain why GAD most often begins in childhood or adolescence; however, it also may start in adulthood.

Approximately 4 million adults in the United States suffer from GAD at some point in a year.  Fortunately, GAD generally responds well to treatment.

If you feel that you or someone you care about may be suffering from this condition, feel free to let me know if I may be of assistance.

Seattle GAD Treatment

Do you find yourself nervous most of the time about a wide range of concerns?    For some, these symptoms occur with the presence of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Treatment:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is defined as a pervasive nervousness that is present throughout the individual’s life for at least 6 months.  Sufferers of GAD imagine and repetitiously recreate worst-case outcomes, even in the absence of a negative likelihood.  GAD affects the whole body, and those suffering from this disorder often have headaches, muscle tension, nausea, shaking, and fatigue.

In addition, individuals with GAD often have other anxiety disorders that co-occur with GAD such as phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic disorder.  In addition, individuals dealing with GAD may also abuse substances such as alcohol or suffer from depression.

The specific cause of GAD is not know, however, a number of factors are believed to play a role including genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental stresses.  Regarding genetics, some research has shown a correlation between family members with GAD.  This may suggest that GAD can be passed down through generation.  However, it is unclear if environment within the home could also explain this tendency.  Research on the brain chemistry of  individuals with GAD has shown an association with this disorder and abnormal neurotransmitter levels.  Neurotransmitters are chemicals that send messages between nerve cells.  When these chemicals are abnormally high or low, is can alter the way the brain responds to it’s environment.
