These individuals deeply fear losing the approval and support of others, and will usually have a great deal of difficulty voicing disagreement with others.  Often, they will even submit themselves to unpleasant tasks if they feel it will secure the approval of those they feel dependent upon.  Individuals with this disorder will often be preoccupied with anxious thoughts of being left alone.  They are at higher risk for anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.  Importantly, these individuals my also be at risk for being in abusive relationships, and may have a great deal of difficulty leaving these relationships.

Seattle Dependent Personality Therapy

Do you feel dependent on others for decision-making and confidence?  For some, these symptoms occur with the presence of Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD).

Dependent Personality Disorder Treatment:

Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an over-reliance on others to fulfill one’s physical and emotional needs.  This excessive need can lead to markedly submissive behaviors, as well as chronic fears of separation and abandonment.  Most often, these behaviors tend to present themselves by early adulthood, and are sourced in a self-perception of being unable to adequately function without help.

Individuals suffering from this disorder tend to have considerable difficulty making daily decisions, such as ordering food or choosing outfits without reassurance or advice from others.  These individuals tend to have a great deal of fear that they will make an incorrect choice, and prefer to have others assume responsibility for major areas of their lives.  This role can be filled by a parent, spouse, friend, or even adult child.  Sufferers of Depending Personality Disorder will be so unsure of their own decisions, that they may even have others decide with whom they should be friends or what kind of career would be best for them.
