Most sufferers of bipolar disorder will find that the cycles are recurrent, and these patterns occur differently for different individuals. Most sufferers of bipolar disorder are able to function regularly between episodes, however, some continue to have problems with mood changes and functioning in daily life between episodes.
There are two types of Bipolar Disorder:
Bipolar I Disorder - exhibiting both a depressive episode and a manic or mixes episode.
Bipolar II Disorder - exhibiting both a depressive episode and a hypomanic episode.
A milder, yet perhaps even more pervasive form of bipolar disorder is referred to as cyclothymia. Like bipolar disorder, cyclothymia cycles between episodes of highs and lows, but the extremity of these poles are less extreme. Some individuals suffering from cyclothymia will eventually develop bipolar disorder.
Generally, mood stabilizers are prescribed to address these symptoms. Counseling can also help clients deal with symptoms of bipolar disorder, and to process the emotional distress that can arise after cycling through the extremes. Particularly, often individuals suffering from bipolar disorder with feel ashamed or guilty for actions performed when in a manic state. Counseling can help the individual process these actions, and develop a deeper sense of self-compassion. In addition, counseling can help the individual develop safety planning for the possibility of a depressive phase, and can help the client learn to monitor his/her own day-to-day functioning
