Adjustment Disorder Treatment

Are you having significant difficulty coping with a major life transition?  For some, these symptoms occur with the presence of adjustment disorder.

Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood

Adjustment Disorder (AD) with Depressed Mood is a mild, reactive form of depression that is an emotional reaction to a specific difficult change (e.g. divorce, job loss, foreclosure, etcetera). Affecting an equal number of males and females, this disorder usually lasts only a few months.  Symptoms of this condition are the same as those experienced with other clinical depressions and can vary greatly, from mild to severe.

Although symptoms are usually mild they nevertheless are severe enough that they interfere with the person's ability to function normally. Common symptoms include (but are not limited to):

- Sadness

- Emptiness

- Loss of interest and pleasure

- Irritability and anger

- Changes in appetite

- Sleep problems

- Restlessness

- Slow movement and thinking

- Fatigue

- Worthlessness and guilt

- Poor concentration

- Thoughts about death and suicide

One difference between Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood and other depressive disorders is that symptoms begin following a specific stressful situation or circumstance. The stressor preceding the symptoms may be almost anything. Typical examples of stressors include (but are not limited to):

- Marital conflict

- Divorce

- Financial problems

- Job loss

- Conflicts in a close friendship

- Relocation to a new city

- Medical (diagnosis of serious illness to self or loved one)

- Witnessing or Being Victim of a Crime

- Natural disaster

Although almost anyone would find such events stressful, the person experiencing an adjustment disorder with depressed mood has more symptoms of depression than others who have experienced the same stressor.  A second notable aspect of this disorder is that the symptoms will last longer than for individuals experiencing the stressor in the absence of adjustment disorder.

If you feel that you or someone you care about may be suffering from this condition, feel free to let me know if I may be of assistance.
